Tobey Maguire Sued For Winnings in Illegal Poker Games
RadarOnline.com and Star magazine report Spider Man actor Tobey Maguire is being sued in a case involving a hedge fund manager who used money from his Ponzi scheme to play illegal, high-stakes poker games.
Maguire is being sued for $311,300, plus interest, by the trustee of the Ponzi scheme victims. Apparently Brad Ruderman, who ran the scheme, used the $25 million he embezzled from investors to pay off his gambling to debt to Maguire and other players.
"As part of the scheme, funds invested in (Ruderman) were transferred to persons such as Defendant (Maguire), who received the funds on account of Ruderman's gambling losses and on account of Defendant's gambling winnings,” the lawsuit says.
The trustee claims Maguire was "not entitled to receive the transfers from the Debtor, which transfers were compromised of improperly-diverted investor funds."
The clandestine poker games, which the lawsuit describes as invitation only events, were held twice weekly at luxury hotels, including the Four Seasons Hotel and the Beverly Hills Hotel. Many high-profile stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, allegedly participated in the games. Lawsuits have not been filed against DiCaprio, Affleck and Damon.
