Hurricane Sandy Death Toll Rises

Atlanta 11/2/2012 3:08:39 AM

As large parts of northeast coastal areas continue to sit underwater, authorities have raised the official death toll from Hurricane Sandy to 76. Numerous people are thought to still be unaccounted for, but the exact number is unknown.

Massive flooding continues to affect New York City where 28 people are confirmed dead. Mayor Michael Bloomberg expects that toll to rise as rescuers continue to search through debris. In addition to locating the missing and rescuing the stranded, the city’s top priorities include getting the subway system running and restoring power to nearly 2 million homes and businesses. According to the Metropolitan Transit Authority, 14 of 23 subway lines are now working. Floodwater is keeping the others out of commission.

In New Jersey, 2.1 million businesses and homes remain without power. While some hard hit areas are still being evacuated, some Hoboken residents were able to return to their homes thanks to water receding back into New York Harbor.

Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and Ohio are also still dealing with damage cleanup and widespread power outages.
