Potential problems with airbags manufactured by Takata Corp. have prompted the worldwide recall of about 3.4 million vehicles by Honda, Toyota, Nissan and General Motors. It was found that, in the event of an accident, the front passenger seat airbag is at risk for deploying with too much pressure, possibly resulting in the rupture of the inflator. A rupture could injure the passenger or start a fire. Six cases of airbags malfunctioning have been reported – 1 by Honda and 5 by Toyota.
All of the affected cars were produced from 2000 to 2004. Honda is recalling about 1.1 vehicles globally, including 426,000 Civics from 2001 to 2003, 92,000 Odysseys from 2002, and 43,000 CR-Vs from 2002 to 2003. Toyota’s recall includes 1.7 million vehicles. Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia, Tundra and Lexus SC 430 models are among the vehicles recalled. Nissan is recalling 480,000 around the world, while General Motors believes 55,000 Pontiac Vibes from 2003 are affected. Mazda is recalling just 20,000 vehicles.
Chrysler confirmed none of their cars were affected. Ford Motor Co. said it is still trying to determine if any cars should be recalled.
