The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the
recall of 2.1 million cribs citing defective hardware that can cause babies to
suffocate. The agency warns parent to immediately stop using Stork Craft
drop-side cribs.
The cribs’ drop-side is attached with plastic hardware
that can detach and create a space between the crib wall and mattress. Babies can
fall into the space and suffocate or fall out of the crib. At least 4 infants
have suffocated and 20 infants have fallen and suffered injuries.
The cribs are made
by Canada-based Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc and sold at major retailers
including Sears, Wal-Mart, JC Penny, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Kmart, Meijer and USA
Baby from January 1993 to October 2009. They were sold online at Amazon.com,
Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Walmart.com and Target.com. About 1.2 million were
distributed in the United States and 968,000 in Canada.
