Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law a measure that will ban California restaurants and other food establishments from using trans fats in their preparation of food. The legislation makes California the first state to take such action against restaurants.
The new law, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2010, bans the use of oil, shortening and margarine used in spreads or for frying.
In a stamen released by Schwarzenegger the Gov. noted “Today we are taking a strong step toward creating a healthier future for California.”
Trans fats have been linked to coronary heart disease and have already been banned from food served in California school cafeterias.
