In 1984, Wozniak founded US Energy Services, strictly a mechanical contracting firm. While designing and installing air conditioning systems, Wozniak was frequently asked why customers seemed to be getting ill simply by occupying their homes or offices; he replied honestly by saying he didn’t know. Indeed, when Wozniak and his staff would remove a moldy HEPA filter, they were still not fully aware of the implications, he says. But as more and more customers approached him with air quality concerns, he realized that their worries clearly merited some research.
