With the ongoing threat of swine flu, it is important to know the facts in order to minimize the risk of acquiring those unwanted guests. Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by a type influenza viruses (type A influenza virus H1N1). Periodically, an outbreak of swine flu has been reported in pigs; however, human infections with severe illness, such as pneumonia and/or respiratory failure, along with diarrhea and vomiting are also reported. The main symptom of this disease is easily confused with that of other flu-like signs such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue etc.
According to various news sources a recent pandemic of swine flu has been reported from Mexico, where more than 100 people are dead and thousands are battling for their lives. According to a report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) 79 laboratory confirmed cases of swine flu have been reported from six different countries around the globe including the United States, Mexico, Canada, Spain, United Kingdom, and New Zealand. France, Germany, Israel and other countries are under surveillance for the current 2009 outbreak of swine flu.
To prevent this epidemic it is essential to have the knowledge of transmission and mode of infections. This virus is mainly transmitted through the air. It can spread from person to person by coughing and/or sneezing of an infected individual. One can also get infected by touching contaminated objects around their surroundings.
In the indoor environment the spread of this disease mainly happens due to contaminated air and surfaces. Contagious individuals are also the prime source of infection. Hygiene monitoring in general and personal hygiene in particular are the best options to minimize the risk of such a pandemic. A proper sanitation and disinfection with effective antimicrobial solutions can be very useful in preventing the spread of the viral inoculums in and around indoor sites.
