Robert Kennedy Says Wife Mary Was “In Agony” For Many Years

Mary Kennedy was “in agony” for many years before her death, her estranged husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tells The New York Times in a new interview. Mary, 52, committed suicide this week in their Mount Kisco, New York home. The medical examiner’s office announced Thursday the cause of death was asphyxiation due to hanging. Toxicology results are pending.

“A lot of times, I don’t know how she made it through the day. She was in a lot of agony for a lot of her life,” Kennedy, the son of former New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, said.

"I don’t think anybody who was around her didn't do everything that they could to try to help her,” he added.

Meanwhile, a Kennedy family rep says Mary’s funeral will be held Saturday morning at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Bedford, New York. A private memorial in Manhattan is planned for a later date.

Mary was an architect specializing in green design. She wed Robert in 1994 when she was pregnant with their first child. After Robert filed for divorce in May 2010, Mary was arrested once for drunk driving and once for driving under the influence of prescription medication. In addition to Robert, Mary is survived by their four children.
