Former Olympic track star Antonio Pettigrew was found
dead in his car early Tuesday. Authorities say Pettigrew was found sitting in
the back seat of his car, which was parked on a bridge in Chatham County, North
Carolina. There was evidence Pettigrew, 42, had taken sleeping pill.
Authorities are investigating if his death was an
accident or suicide.
Pettigrew was an assistant track and field coach at the
University of North Carolina. "Although we are still learning the
circumstances, we are deeply saddened to learn of Antonio's death. I was
particularly impressed with the relationships he established with his student-
athletes and the pride he took in representing the University of North
Carolina,” the university’s athletic director Dick Baddour said.
