Body of California Doctor Found in Chimney

The body of missing California doctor Jacquelyn Kotarac was found Saturday lodged in the chimney of her boyfriend’s home, Bakersfield police said Tuesday. Kotarac was reported missing last Thursday after she did not show up for work.

Kotarac, 49, was last seen Wednesday night trying to “force her way” inside her boyfriend’s home. Authorities say the boyfriend, who has not been identified, “left the house undetected to avoid a confrontation.” He did not return home that night.

When Kotarac did not appear for work the next day, the boyfriend and Kotarac's assistant searched the house but did not find evidence that she had gotten inside. They found her purse, cell phone and money outside the house.

That night the boyfriend stayed at the house. He left for Europe on Friday. A house sitter found Kotarac’s body lodged in the chimney about 2 feet from the fireplace opening on Saturday.

Police say evidence suggests Kotarac “accessed the roof via a ladder and on her own volition removed the chimney cap and slid down the flue feet first.”

Authorities had to dismantle the chimney from the outside of the house to remove Kotarac’s body.
