Steve Jobs Takes Leave of Absence From Apple
In a memo sent to Apple employees, CEO Steve Jobs announced he has taken a leave of absence to deal with health problems. Jobs, who previously battled pancreatic cancer, did not reveal the nature of his medical condition. This is Jobs’ second leave of absence in two years. In 2009, the 55-year-old went on a 6-month hiatus to have a liver transplant.
"At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company," Jobs says in the letter,” Jobs wrote in a letter to Apple employees this week. "I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy."
Tim Cook, Apple’s head of worldwide sales and operations, will act as CEO in Jobs’ absence.
Jobs co-founded Apple with Steve Wozniak and others in 1976. He also served as CEO of Pixar Animation Studios. Jobs became a member of the board of The Walt Disney Company in 2006 when the company acquired Pixar.
