Self-checkout System: Transforming the Shopping
Experience

Self-scanning
allow customers to scan, pay and bag their retail purchases without interaction
with a store employee. Customers can scan items with a handheld barcode scanner
or stationary scanner and then pay using cash, credit/debit cards or mobile
payment methods. This checkout process is typically faster for customers with
small baskets compared to standing in a traditional checkout line.

How Self-checkout Works

Self-checkout machines use innovative technologies under the hood to enable
this checkout experience. Cameras and weight sensors are installed to identify
items placed in the bagging area. The system runs item images through a
database to identify products. If it cannot automatically identify an item, it
will display the image for the customer to select from options or ask for
assistance. Sensors also detect if all items are paid for by measuring the
total weight in bags versus what was scanned.

Payment options at self-checkout include inserting cash, swiping/inserting a
credit/debit card or using a mobile wallet. Sensors read the payment and send
it for processing. For cards, the machine connects to the payment network to
process transactions similarly to a traditional point-of-sale terminal. Some
stores allow splitting payments between different tender types like part cash
and part card. Once paid, the customer receives their digital or printed
receipt to complete the purchase.

Benefits of Self-checkout System for Customers

One of the biggest benefits of Self-checkout
System
is saving time over standing in checkout lines during peak
shopping hours. Customers can complete self-checkout transactions in just a few
minutes for average baskets, versus sometimes waiting 10+ minutes at a manned
register. It also allows for purchasing items any time stores are open without
being limited by cashier hours.

Some find the experience more private than handing items to a cashier to be
scanned and bagged. It gives customers control over their purchases without
judgment from others in line. Mobility impaired customers may find
self-checkout counters at a height better suited for them versus high cashier
counters. For those who travel frequently, it is similar to e-commerce
checkouts they are used to on the go.
