Surface Disinfectant: Keeping Your Surfaces
Germ-Free
What
are Surface preventatives?
Surface preventatives are cleaning products used to kill germs and prevent the
spread of infectious diseases on surfaces. They are designed to help disinfect
environments where germs are readily transmitted, such as healthcare
facilities, schools, gyms, food processing plants and more. Proper disinfection
is important for preventing the spread of illnesses.
Types of Surface Disinfectant
There are several main types of Surface preventatives:
Alcohol-Based Disinfectants
Alcohol-based disinfectants contain at least 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol as
the main active ingredient. They work quickly by denaturing the proteins in
germs and viruses, disrupting their structures. Common alcohol-based
disinfectants include rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizers, and disinfecting wipes.
These products are effective against bacteria and viruses but may not be
suitable for all surfaces.
Chlorine Bleach Disinfectants
Regular household bleach contains 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. When diluted with
water according to label instructions, bleach is effective at killing germs and
viruses. It works by breaking down their cellular walls. Bleach disinfectants
are inexpensive and commonly used in healthcare and food facilities. However,
bleach can damage some surfaces and loses effectiveness rapidly after diluting.
Quaternary Ammonium Compounds
Also known as quats, these disinfectants contain chemicals such as benzalkonium
chloride or didecyl dimethyl Surface
Disinfectant ammonium chloride that disrupt pathogens' cell membranes. They
are commonly used as all-purpose cleaners and disinfectants, offering residual
protection. However, they may require a longer contact time than other products
to be effective against certain viruses and bacteria.
Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfectants
Hydrogen peroxide disinfectants damage germs by producing strong oxygen
radicals. They are effective against a wide range of microbes and are
considered non-toxic. Hydrogen peroxide disinfectants are commonly used for
disinfecting medical equipment and surfaces. The chemicals break down into
water and oxygen, so they are safe for the environment.
