Doctors at drug rehabs are intrigued by the newest edition of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Substance Abuse Treatment center experts say the manual will be released in 2013. The DSM V is published by the American Psychiatric Association. Drug rehab administrators say it influences how doctors diagnose mental disorders. It also influences which conditions insurance companies will cover, including coverage for addictions at substance abuse treatment centers.Drug rehabs are taking notice of a new section on Addiction and Related Disorders features because it features new vocabulary relevant to substance abuse treatment centers. The words "dependence" and "abuse" have been cut from the manual. Publishers feel "dependence" can be confused with physical and psychological dependence. Drug rehabs have long believed the term "abuse" has no scientific support.
These terms have been replaced by the words "use disorder." For instance, "alcohol dependency" and "alcohol abuse" will now be termed alcohol use disorder. These types of "use disorders" are classified under Addictions. Drug rehabs and substance abuse treatment centers may be soon telling gambling addicts that insurance will cover their addiction treatment. Gambling has achieved "addiction" status. It is termed gambling use disorder. The editors of DSM V are considering "Internet Addiction" to be included in the DSM someday, but they have not included it in the DSM V. "Binge Eating" is now classified as an independent disorder under Eating Disorders.
