Heat Treated Glass: Enhancing Strength and Performance Through Thermal Processing

Glass is a remarkably versatile material that
finds applications across many industries due to its desirable properties such
as transparency, durability and corrosion resistance. However, in its annealed
or untreated state, glass can be susceptible to damage from thermal or
mechanical stresses. Heat treatment processes leverage the amorphous structure
of glass to enhance its physical characteristics through controlled thermal
conditioning.

Tempering

Tempering, also called thermal tempering or heat strengthening, subjects glass
to precisely controlled heating and rapid cooling. The Heat
Treated Glass
is heated to its softening point, then quickly cooled by
blasting air onto the surface. This introduces compressive stresses in the
surface and balancing tensile stresses within. The result is around 4 times
greater strength and increased resistance to impact and thermal stresses
compared to untreated glass. Tempered glass spontaneously fractures into small
granular pieces rather than large shards if broken, improving safety.
