Afghan authorities say a young husband murdered his wife Saturday because she had given him daughters and no sons. Police in the Khanabad district of Kunduz province say 22-year-old Storay was beaten and strangled by her husband, Sher Mohammad, and mother-in-law, Wali Hazrata. Storay gave birth to her youngest daughter with Mohammad, 29, three months ago.
District Police Chief Sufi Habibullah say a neighbor found Storay’s body in the Khanabad home she shared with Mohammed and their children. Before her death, Storay had reportedly told family members her husband blamed her for them not having a son and threatened to kill her if she delivered another daughter.
Mohammad fled Khanabad and is currently being sought by authorities. Wali Hazrata was arrested for her involvement in the crime and is being detained at the Kunduz city jail. She claims Storay committed suicide by hanging because she felt guilty.
"My son did not commit the crime. But after three daughters, Storay herself felt guilty and committed suicide,” Hazrata claims.
