More than 100 people died early Monday in a large fire at a poultry processing plant in China’s Jilin province.
According to local reports, the blaze started around 6 a.m. at Baoyuanfeng Poultry Plant after a small explosion. The cause of the explosion remains unclear. The state-run Xinhua news agency said 119 workers died because of narrow or locked exits and at least 54 workers were injured. About 100 people escaped with no injuries.
Survivors said confusion and chaos made it difficult to find exits. “Inside and outside the workshop was glowing red, and the lighting and escape indicators were all out,” Wang Xiaoyun told the China News Service.
"Suddenly, the lights inside went out and the plant got quite dark," Wang Fengya told Xinhua. "When I finally ran out and looked back at the plant, I saw high flames."
