North Korea Reports 88 Deaths In Heavy Rain and Flooding
As heavy rain continued to soak North Korea on Monday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) predicted more damage to buildings and crops in the coming days. The agency said Monday the majority of the country is “expected to suffer big damage from continuous downpour accompanied by thunder and storm.”
Torrential downpours over the past week have already wreaked havoc over a large swath of the country, particularly in the capital of Pyongyang and the provinces of North and South Phyongan. According to KCNA, dozens of people have died, thousands of homes have been destroyed by flooding, and thousands of acres of crops are submerged.
On Saturday, KCNA put the death toll at 88. The majority of the deaths occurred in South Phyongan province. At least 134 people have been injured in the rain and flooding, and nearly 63,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. Over 5,000 houses have been severely damaged or destroyed. Nearly 12,000 acres of crops have been washed away in the deluge and about 64,000 acres are currently sitting under water.
