What is Dyspraxia?

Dyspraxia is a problem with planning and controlling the body's movement to carry out a motor skill (action) required to correctly carry out the steps in a process and ensure a task is carried out as effectively as possible. The brain must gather and store sensory data from the environment and the body to accomplish this, such as tactile (touch), kinesthetic (body position awareness), vestibular (balance awareness), and visual information. The brain must then process and interpret this information to produce a suitable reaction, such as how to interact with the surrounding environment, plan the subsequent movement, and eventually carry out the performance. The child must be able to organise and plan how to carry out the activity. They must also be able to evaluate their performance successfully to make improvements for the next time.

Common problems faced by a dyspraxic child include, but are not limited to:

-Physical activity may not be a priority for them, or they may find it difficult to engage in certain activities because they find them challenging or failed at them in the past.

-Due to a history of failure or a fear of failure, a peer may avoid socialising with them or be excluded from participating in physical games (on the playground, for example).

-Prone frustration when working on assignments.

-prone to distraction

-diminished self-esteem

-fear when requested to take part in challenging activities.

-Tends to look for younger kids to play with because their talents are comparable, and they feel more comfortable doing so.

-When given motor activities, some people whine, "This is too hard" or "I can't do it."

-Because changes provide new situations and activities that call for forethought and new knowledge, some people may resist changes in how or when tasks are completed.
