The pairing of acclaimed jazz pianist Brad Mehldau and mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile may seem like a stretch to some unfamiliar with the improvisational and eclectic vocabulary the two possess. Both drawing from influences ranging from Bach to Radiohead, the two have found a special chemistry in one another, evident in their unique ability to weave in and out of one another’s playing. Together, they are capable of bombastic flourishes of blazing runs, delicate ambiance, and soulful interludes, stopping on a dime through the kind of effortless communication that only masters of their instruments are capable of. Mehldau has shared creative endeavors with jazz giants like Pat Metheny and Joshua Redman; produced lauded efforts as a bandleader with his powerful trio; and has received praise for his solo interpretations of pieces from icons like George and Ira Gershwin, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, and Radiohead. His playing has planted him in the spotlight as one of the most exciting young American instrumentalists on the scene. Chris Thile has been expanding the vocabulary of the mandolin since his teenage years with the wildly successful string band Nickel Creek. He has since gained recognition as the leader of the progressive bluegrass outfit Punch Brothers, touring internationally and building a reputation as the most innovative touring string band around. His various side projects have included collaborations with legends like Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Dolly Parton, and the Dixie Chicks, solidifying his place as an eminent force on the mandolin. These two groundbreaking American instrumentalists will share the stage at Austin’s famed Paramount Theatre for a very special night of innovative originals, stunning covers, and stellar improvisation. DO NOT miss it! *Saturday, April 20th Doors @ 7:00pm | Show @ 8:00pm The Paramount Theatre 713 Congress Avenue Austin, TX
