Yesterday, everyone was talking about the new David Bowie music video for his song “The Next Day,” and the video was subsequently taken down. However a couple hours after stories started being written about the video being banned, YouTube brought it right back.
YouTube apologized and offered the explanation that due to the “massive volume of videos on our site, sometime we make the wrong call.” Picking the wrong video is understandable, how many times has someone been “rick-rolled?”
YouTube also said that as soon as they learn they have taken down a video in error, they reinstate it as soon as possible.
With the video as evidence, it is clear that 66-year old David Bowie has not lost his rock flare. The video is explicit and racy and involves the clergy behaving very unchristian-like. According to one article posted after the video was “banned”, it had the “explicit” parental advisory label and was banned for violating terms of service just a few hours after it was released.
The controversial video was directed by Floria Sigismondi, the Italian photographer and director who gave us The Runaways with Kristen Stewart and a short film for Bowie’s “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” featuring actress Tilda Swinton.
“The Next Day” is now back on YouTube.
