U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Make Amnesty Appeal for Journalists Jailed in North Korea
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has appealed to North Korea, asking them to grant amnesty to two American journalists who have been sentenced to 12 years of hard labor for illegally crossing the country’s border earlier this year.
The two journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, admitted on Thursday that they were in fact guilty of the charges lodged against them but continued to plead for their freedom. Clinton told reporters on Friday that Ling and Lee had expressed “great remorse for the incident” and hoped that North Korea would release the pair.
Clinton had previously maintained the two journalists were being held illegally and that the charges against them were baseless but Friday’s appeal appeared to indicate she may now believe the allegations are founded.
According to some reports North Korea would be willing to free Ling and Lee if the United States were to make a formal apology.
