The presidential election closed last night with incumbent Barack Obama defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney. As of Wednesday morning, President Obama had secured his re-election bid with 303 electoral votes, a number well over the minimum 270 electoral votes needed. Romney holds 206 electoral votes. The important swing state of Florida still remains too close to call.
President Obama commented on his victory shortly before 12 a.m. on Twitter. "This happened because of you. Thank you," he wrote. "We're all in this together. That's how we campaigned, and that's who we are. Thank you. -bo."
The 51-year-old delivered his victory speech after midnight at the Chicago convention center. “We have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America the best is yet to come," he said, adding that he is "more determined, and more inspired than ever about the work there is to do.”
For his part, Romney delivered a concession speech in Boston. "This is a time of great challenges for America, and I pray that the president will be successful in guiding our nation,” he said.
Both Romney and Obama called for Republicans and Democrats to work together. Democrats retained control the Senate and Republicans lead the House of Representatives.
