President
Barack Obama could suffer yet another setback to his ambitious healthcare
reforms as critics of the plan continue to attack the controversial “public
option” aspect that has further divided liberals and conservatives.
While Obama
has gained support for his healthcare reforms from his Democratic Party he has
had less success convincing Republicans concerning the viability of the plan.
Obama has pressed for a government-run option that would offer healthcare
insurance to 46 million uninsured Americans yet opponents of that option have
pointed to a lack of money to fund such a program and expressed little faith in
the government’s ability to effectively operate that program.
Health
Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has tried to downplay the significance of the
“public option,” revealing in an interview on CNN that it was “not the
essential element” of the reforms. Sebelius went on to stay that Obama may be
willing to examine the idea of non-profit insurance co-operatives to take the
place of the “public option.”
Those
non-profit co-operatives would then be able to sell insurance in competition
with private insurance companies.
Obama has made healthcare reform his top domestic priority and the “public option” has been a key component and an absolute must to any such plan. Those feelings appear to be slipping as he could be forced by conservative opponents to drop the government-run scheme in order for the healthcare reforms to pass.
The senior community has been very outspoken about Obama's health care plan, even canceling their AARP service. American Seniors Association has emerged as an alternative for these disgruntled senior citizens.
