U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy Dies at 77 after Lengthy Battle with Brain Tumor
Veteran Democratic U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy has died at the age of 77 after a long battle with a brain tumor.
Kennedy, known throughout his political life as Ted, served as senator from Massachusetts for nearly 50 years, replacing his brother, John F. Kennedy, when he resigned to become president in 1962. Kennedy, known as the “Lion of the Senate,” would be re-elected seven times.
President Barack Obama addressed Kennedy’s passing on Wednesday saying, “Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States senator of our time.”
Kennedy and Obama grew very close during the 2008 presidential campaign as the former Illinois senator found a supporter of his education and healthcare initiatives. Those issues were among the many that Kennedy had championed throughout his tenure in the Senate, having had his name on many of the most significant bills concerning the welfare of American citizens.
While Kennedy was a stalwart figure in the Democratic party Kennedy was equally respected in by the Republican party for his commitment to his beliefs and causes.
