U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Moscow, to Meet with President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has arrived in Moscow and will be holding meetings with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday in hopes of coming to an agreement on how to handle Iran and its nuclear program.
Clinton has been pushing for tougher action against Iran if they do not suspend their uranium enrichment program by the end of the year. Russia has backed away from supporting further sanctions against Iran, saying they have not proven effective.
While Russia has taken a more hands-off approach to Iran’s nuclear program they may feel pressure to back a UN Security Council initiative. Just last month U.S. President Barack Obama announced that he would abandon a planned missile defense system in Europe, an announcement that was greatly welcomed by Russia who had already said the system was a threat to their national security.
Obama had pledged to reset relations with Russia and his decision to scrap the defense shield was seen as a step in that direction. Now the ball appears to be in Russia’s court as they decide whether they will support further sanctions against Iran or block the measure as a member of the U.S. Security Council.
