Barack Obama Introduces Joe Biden as Running Mate, Says Senator has a “Fundamental Decency”
The Barack Obama campaign ended months of questions with a simple posting on their Website and text message to millions of phones stating “Barack has chosen Joe Biden.”
On Saturday afternoon Obama was a bit more formal as he introduced Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his vice presidential running mate at a Springfield, Illinois rally, calling the 65-year-old a “man with a distinguished record and a fundamental decency.”
More importantly to Obama is Biden’s experience in foreign policy as well as his ability to attract middle-class Americans, both are areas in which Obama has struggled.
At one point during his introduction of Biden in front of the Old State Capitol Obama managed to work both of those qualities into a single thought noting, “He's an expert on foreign policy whose heart and values are rooted firmly in the middle class.”
When Biden finally took the stage he recounted his own short-lived bid for the Democratic presidential nomination and spoke about is relationship with Obama during that course of time saying, “You learn about a man when you debate with him, you see how he thinks. Barack Obama has the vision and courage to make this a better place. He is a clear-eyed pragmatist who will get the job done.”
For many Democratic voters the choice of Biden as Obama’s running mate brought about great relief. Knowing that the Republicans had already attacked Obama on his lack of experience in foreign policy and his inability to attract middle-class Americans the choice of Biden was clear cut.
Biden has spent more than three decades serving in the U.S. Senate and is currently serving as the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. His extensive travels to the Middle East and recent trip to the former Soviet republic of Georgia should help eradicate a ticket of inexperience and his solid relationship with the working-class could end talks of an out-of-touch campaign.
Those were key factors for an Obama campaign that needs to focus on swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania to capture the White House in November.
The Democratic Party will officially nominate their candidate at the Democratic National Convention next week in Denver. The convention begins Aug. 25.
