Sen. Barack Obama accepted the nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate on Thursday night, becoming the first African-American to lead a major party ticket.
Obama said that his opponent, Republican presidential candidate John McCain, "doesn't get it" during his highly-anticipated speech during the Democratic National Convention.
Obama challenged McCain and the Republican party on the digression of America on several factors, such as energy, health care and the economy. He stated that McCain would just extend the Bush Administration.
"We are here because we love this country too much to let the next four years look just like the last eight. On November 4, we must stand up and say: 'Eight is enough,'" said Obama.
Obama lauded McCain for being a patriot, but said that McCain is out of touch with everyday Americans. "It's not because John McCain doesn't care," Obama said. "It's because John McCain doesn't get it."
Throughout his dissection of McCain, Obama still mapped out his vision. He spoke of his plan to get rid of America's dependence on foreign oil, fair wages for women, free college tuition for America's soldiers, afforable healthcare for all Americans. He also pledged to end the war in Iraq in a responsible manner, and "finish the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan."
Most importantly, Obama spoke several times about cross-party unity, mentioning that Democrats and Republicans need to come together to move this country forward. He put the ownership on Americans to help fight for the changes they see fit and also urged that Americans not make "big elections about small things."
"I stand before you tonight because all across America something is stirring," Obama told the audience. "What the naysayers don't understand is that this election has never been about me. It's about you."
Obama's address fell on the 45th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech. Despite the racial implications of his speech and the anniversary, Obama did not speak of race during his speech.
