Barack Obama Urges John McCain to Continue with Presidential Debate

Atlanta, GA 9/25/2008 4:34:18 AM

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate, announced plans Wednesday to continue with Friday's presidential debate in Oxford, MS.

Obama stated that he believes the economic crisis is very dire, but suspending his campaign was not necessary. He also said that he believes it is more important than ever for he and McCain to have their presidential debate.

"It's my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess," said Obama.

Earlier on Wednesday, Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, announced plans to suspend his campaign in order to return to Washington and attempt to lead a bipartisan coalition to pass legislature on the bailout crisis on Wall Street. McCain asked Obama to join him in his effort.

McCain also urged for the Commission on Presidential Debates to postpone the first presidential debate between he and Obama, which is scheduled for Friday in Oxford, MS, and support his decision.

Obama responded by alerting the media that he was the first to call McCain in order to make a joint statement urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner about the economic crisis. The call was made around 8:30am EST Wednesday morning.

At 2:30pm, McCain responded and agreed to join Obama in his plan for bipartisan legislature to move forward with the proposal.

Soon thereafter, McCain held a press conference announcing his plan to suspend his campaign due to the economic plan and crisis.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Board Ben Bernanke has spoken to the Senate and House in order to get the government to pass a bill that would cost Americans $700 billion.
