In their only vice presidential debate of the 2008 election campaign Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Joe Biden took center stage at Washington University in St. Louis with both candidates appealing to the middle class while pointing out fundamental differences between their two parties.
Palin and Biden were faced with questions ranging from the economy and foreign policy to energy and the environment with each using a different strategy to answer. While Biden used much of his response time to link Palin and her running mate John McCain to President George Bush, Palin often personalized her answers, opting to stress her understanding of current issues through personal experience.
The Alaskan governor was sure to promote her position as a Washington outsider while portraying Biden as a beltway insider who has become accustomed to political double-speak. Palin stressed “Americans are craving that straight talk,” and noted McCain was the candidate that defined that action while casting Biden’s running mate Barack Obama as a candidate who has often said one thing to one group while saying another to the next.
Palin attacked Obama for a remark he made during the Democratic primaries in which he stated he would be willing to meet with volatile leaders of countries like Syria, Venezuela, North Korea and Cuba without preconditions. She called that decision beyond bad judgment, labeling it irresponsible and dangerous and declared it was not the right path for America.
That led to a heated exchange about Iraq in which Biden declared the Democratic ticket had a plan to end American involvement in the country while Palin equated that plan to a white flag of surrender.
While both Palin and Biden were facing serious questions about how they would fair in the debate each appeared to pass the test. Biden came across as a knowledgeable candidate who could clearly draw a distinction between the two tickets and tie those differences to the American people while Palin proved she could stand the pressure of questions on foreign policy and the economy while pushing across her point that, “I may not answer the question the way you want to hear, but I'll talk straight to the American people and let them know my track record.”
