The Los Angeles Times has refused to release a video they received in which Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is caught on tape praising an alleged advocate of the Palestinian Liberation Organization.
Obama was attending a dinner that honored a colleague, Rashid Khalidi, who was at the University of Chicago during the same period as the presidential candidate. Khalidi has been an outspoken critic of the U.S. policy concerning Israel and has accused Israel of establishing an “apartheid system” of government that targeted Palestinians.
During the dinner, which marked Khalidi’s departure from the University of Chicago for a new position at Columbia University, Obama reflected on his many conversations with Khalidi and described the talks as “consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases.”
The L.A. Times also noted that during Obama’s toast he stated, “It's for that reason that I'm hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation -- a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona (Khalidi’s wife) and Rashid's dinner table ... [but around] this entire world.”
From 1976 to 1982 Khalidi was said to be the director of WAFA, the official press agency of Palestine.
Six months ago the L.A. Times ran a story that highlighted the existence of the video but it drew little attention but with the presidential election less than one week away many on the right have demanded the paper release the video. They have accused the paper of covering up the story to protect Obama, the L.A. Times has endorsed Barack.
According to the Los Angeles Times editor Russ Stanton the decision not to release the video has nothing to do with the paper’s alleged protection of Obama but rather their promise to the source of the video. Stanton has stated, “The Los Angeles Times did not publish the videotape because it was provided to us by a confidential source who did so on the condition that we not release. The Times keeps its promises to sources.”
