Terry McAuliffe, Former DNC Chairman, Files Papers for Possible Governor Run in Virginia
Terry McAuliffe, the former Democratic National Convention chair, filed papers that will allow him to run for governor of Virginia on Monday.
McAuliffe, who served as the chairman of the DNC from 2001 through 2005, told The Associated Press he set up a campaign committee and will tour Virginia for the next 60 days before making his candidacy certain.
McAuliffe will face two other Democrats if he decides to enter the race in 2009. State Senator Creigh Deeds narrowly lost the attorney general's race in 2005, and House Democratic Caucus chairman Brian Moran is also in the race.
Virginia, which had a history of voting Republican, has had two consecutive Democratic governors in Mark Warner, who won in 2001, and current governor Tim Kaine. The state's chief executives are limited to one term at a time. In addition to the governor position, Jim Webb surprisingly seating the Republican Senate incumbent George Allen in 2006.
