New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, selected by President-elect Barack Obama as his nominee for secretary of Commerce, has withdrawn his name for the position due to an investigation relating to a company that had contracts with his state.
Richardson has said he, along with his Administration, have done nothing wrong but said his decision to withdraw was due to the problems it could pose in achieving confirmation.
Obama accepted Richardson’s decision on Sunday but continued to support the Gov. noting, “Governor Richardson is an outstanding public servant and would have brought to the job of Commerce Secretary and our economic team great insights accumulated through an extraordinary career in federal and state office.”
