Hillary
Clinton has been endorsed as the next secretary of state after the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee voted 16-1 in favor of the New York senator. The endorsement
will now be followed by a vote by the Senate
The
Committee’s endorsement was widely expected after Clinton fielded questions on
Tuesday from the 17-member body. During that confirmation hearing Clinton said
she would return to a time of diplomacy in foreign relations and work to strengthen
ties with allies.
Only
Louisiana Republican Sen. David Vitter voted against the confirmation of
Hillary Clinton.
The
Senate vote is expected to take place shortly after the inauguration of Barack
Obama on Jan. 20.
