President
Barack Obama has announced plans to renew military trials for some detainees
still being held at Guantanamo Bay but he also ensured the controversial practice
would come with improved conditions.
In
one of his first acts as president Obama ordered the military trials come to an
end, calling them flawed and unjust but on Friday he reversed that order after
saying the trials were too important to not carry out. Obama did say the
renewal of trials would come with several reforms most notably no evidence
gathered through “torture” techniques would be admissible, restrictions on
hearsay evidence and a defendant will be allowed to select their own attorney
if they wish.
Obama
had targeted the practice of military trials for detainees during his
presidential campaign, calling the commissions “an enormous failure” and vowing
to end them once in office.
Several
civil liberties groups have been angered by Obama’s decision to reverse course
on the matter yet the President, in a statement released on Friday, backed his
decision by declaring the military commissions were appropriate for trying
enemies as long as a legitimate legal framework was in place.
