Canadian freestyle skier and four-time Winter X Games champ Sarah Burke has died from injuries sustained in a ski accident last week. Her publicist, Nicole Wool, confirmed her death in a statement Thursday. The 29-year-old passed away “surrounded by those she loved” after suffering “irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest,” according to Wool. Her organs and tissues were donated.
"The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the international outpouring of support they have received from all the people Sarah touched," Wool added.
Burke fell while doing a trick on a superpipe in Park City, Utah on January 10. Peter Judge, the CEO of the Canadian freestyle team, said Burke appeared to have “bounced from her feet to her head” after landing the trick. She suffered a torn vertebral artery and went into cardiac arrest. Burke, who was married to skier Rory Bushfield, underwent surgery last Thursday to repair the artery.
