Although Jeremy Stevens was not charged in a domestic violence arrest in Washington earlier this month, the case prompted Florida authorities to jail the NFL player for violating his probation in a 2010 drug possession case. Stevens’ lawyer tells USA Today Sports that it is “improper” for Stevens to be held without bond, or have even been arrested for probation violation in the first place.
"I believe this is improper. A judge in Washington — after he had a full hearing in which the state of Washington called witnesses, including a law enforcement official — found no probable cause,” said attorney Mark O'Brien. "In this particular case, he should not be held without bond — he shouldn't even have his probation violated."
"He is very upset and angry," added O'Brien. "And he is hopeful that the law will be followed once we get into court."
The domestic violence case against Stevens was dropped earlier this month. Stevens was arrested on Monday, November 12 in Kirkland, Washington after police received a disturbance call about a fight at a private residence where Stevens and his then-fiance Hope Solo were partying with friends. Stevens was arrested after officers noted he was wearing a bloodstained shirt and “appeared to be hiding” in an upstairs bedroom when they arrived. Stevens also confessed to arguing with Solo about whether they should stay in Washington or move to Florida after their marriage. Signs of a fight were found in the bedroom and Solo had a cut on her elbow.
Solo and Stevens tied the knot the day after the incident. The Olympic soccer star spoke out about the incident to Larry Brown Sports earlier this week. "It's unfortunate what the media can do to really judge before the facts are out there. It's hard to see, but it's a hard truth and it's part of life, she said. "I'm happy. I'm happily married. We never stand for domestic violence. I've never been hit in my life. It's unfortunate, and that's what the media can do."
She also Tweeted her support of Stevens. “I feel bad for all the ignorance in the world. People are so quick to judge. The media spins stories in such dramatic fashion. I will continue to show love, and never make judgments. I am blessed w True Love & the beautiful game of soccer. I wish everybody the same happiness,” she wrote.
