Lance Armstrong’s doping scandal has already resulted in the loss of his 7 Tour de France titles, a lifetime ban from professional cycling and his resignation from Livestrong, and now it is stripping him of his bronze medal from the 2000 Olympic Games. On Thursday, the International Olympic Committee confirmed they have requested the return of the medal and Armstrong’s Olympic certificate.
"The IOC has asked that the medal and certificate be returned by Armstrong to the United States Olympic Committee, which should forward them to the IOC. The decision was taken in principle at the IOC Executive Board meeting in December, but its implementation required the expiration of the appeal deadline," the committee said in a statement.
Armstrong was stripped of his 7 Tour de France titles last year after he decided to stop battling illegal doping accusations.
“This is a heartbreaking example of how the win-at-all costs culture of sport, if left unchecked, will overtake fair, safe and honest competition, but for clean athletes, it is a reassuring reminder that there is hope for future generations to compete on a level playing field without the use of performance-enhancing drugs,” USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart said at the time.
"Nobody wins when an athlete decides to cheat with dangerous performance-enhancing drugs, but clean athletes at every level expect those of us here on their behalf to pursue the truth to ensure the win-at-all-cost culture does not permanently overtake fair, honest competition," Tygart added. "Any time we have overwhelming proof of doping, our mandate is to initiate the case through the process and see it to conclusion as was done in this case."
The USADA found that Armstrong used illegal substances like EPO and steroids to enhance his performance. He also forced other riders to use drugs by threatening to fire them.
Part 1 of Armstrong’s interview with Oprah Winfrey will air tonight on OWN. It is widely believed that he admits in the interview to using performance enhancing drugs.
