New England Patriots wide receiver Donte Stallworth remains hospitalized in Miami for treatment of severe burns he sustained Saturday when the hot air balloon he was riding in struck power lines and plunged to the ground. The athlete’s lawyer Christopher Lyons has confirmed Stallworth was transferred from Kendall Regional Medical Center to the burn unit of Jackson Memorial Hospital on Sunday.
"I appreciate all the prayers and well wishes more than you know," Stallworth tweeted Saturday. "I feel lucky to be alive."
Stallworth’s girlfriend, Soleil Guerrero, was also involved in the crash. She sustained burns and is being treated at Jackson Memorial.
The accident is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. No other details were available.
Drew Rosenhaus, Stallworth’s agent, says the football star “will be fine” and is expected to be back to work “in a matter of weeks.” "He will be able to resume his NFL career," Rosenhaus added.
Stallworth, 32, has played for the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins. He made headlines in 2009 when he struck and killed 59-year-old Mario Reyes while driving his Bentley on MacArthur Causeway in Miami Beach. He was charged with DUI manslaughter and served 24 days in jail. Stallworth was suspended by the NFL for 1 years.
