In 1998 there was a new take on college football rankings. It was known as the BCS, Bowl Championship Series. Many people had there fair share of issues with the system noting that there was always going to be a team that drew the short straw and would be left out of a popular bowl. Not to mention, if one of the selected bowl games ended up being a rout for one team. Consistency was what the BCS lacked, and the argument was due to the fact that the decision was left up to a computer.
Luckily for college football fans, 2013 marked the final year of the Bowl Championship Series. So what’s next? That’s right, the College Football Playoff that everyone has been asking for. Eliminate the thought of Co-Champions, which is what happened in 2003 when LSU won the BCS, but USC was crowned top of the AP pole. The two shared the crown of being the best in the game. This year through the year of 2025, there will be a committee of thirteen individuals that will put together a Top 25 list that ultimately decide the bowl games along with the schools that will make the first ever college playoff.
Last week, the first ever college football playoff rankings were released. The four teams that have performed well enough to receive recognition for their performance on the field were Mississippi State, Florida State, Auburn and Ole Miss. After this past weekend of college football that included one of those four teams losing, the rankings are sure to be a little different depending on the views of the committee.
On Saturday night, the primetime game of the weekend pinned the number three and number four team against each other. Auburn went in to Oxford and defeated their SEC West conference foe in Ole Miss. Two-loss teams will more than likely find them on the outside looking in when the final rankings are released on December 7th. While the top three teams found ways to pick up victories this past Saturday, most feel that the fourth spot will be the only one that has a change in teams when the rankings are released on Tuesday November 4th, 2014 at 7:30 pm.
Who will be the team that takes the spot of the Ole Miss Rebels? The Oregon Ducks seem to be in the driver seat of taking over the number four spot. After defeating the Stanford Cardinal 45-16 this past week, they took advantage of the opportunity to better their playoff resume. The other team that could possibly sneak in to the top four will be Alabama who had a week off to rest and prepare for this weeks matchup against LSU. As for the other three teams, they control their own destiny. Keep winning and they will ensure themselves a spot to take the top spot in college football for 2014.
