The NFC South has been one of the leagues most intriguing divisions for all of the wrong reasons. Last season, the Panthers were able to run away with the division. This year has become a struggle to label any of the four teams in the NFC South as a good team. Entering the season the Saints were the odds on favorite to win the division. If things remain the same then that is how the season will play out.
At the half way point of the season, the Saints posses the best record in the NFC South with a 4-4 record. Most experts would say that with that record, it is unusual that they lead the division. The biggest problem that the Saints have had this season is playing games on the road away from the Superdome in Louisiana. For the season, the Saints have only one win on the road which came against division rival Carolina. The offense led by Drew Brees has still been exciting to watch. Like always they are putting up points and gaining a ton of yards. However, their defense has been pretty lack luster to this point.
In the off-season the Saints made one of the bigger splashes in the market by signing Jairus Byrd to a contract. Many raised the question as to why when they still had to pay the most dynamic tight end in the game, Jimmy Graham. The Saints have not seen much value come from the high priced signing. In early October, the free safety tore his lateral meniscus in his knee. The injury will require Byrd to miss the remainder of the season while he recovers. This season, the Saints are lucky to be playing in the division they do. If they were to play in any other division, there record would put them no higher than 3rd place. The stretch of the second season will prove how good New Orleans is. Fans would like to see the team they see in the Superdome every week, regardless of where they are playing.
