Cleveland has had its fair share of heartache for over 50 years in the sports world. Not having a major championship in the city since 1964 has taken its toll on the fans. That almost changed back in the 2007 season when they reached the NBA Finals led by LeBron James. We all know what happened to the Cavaliers after the San Antonio Spurs defeated them. Three years after the defeat, the King left his hometown team and went to the Miami Heat.
Once James left the Cavs, the team was left without their franchise player and hometown hero. The struggle has been astronomical for Cleveland’s basketball team since the departure. In 2011, the Cavaliers used their first round draft pick on Kyrie Irving. The point guard from Duke became the new face and was named the All-Star Game MVP in last season’s showcase.
The offseason in 2014 for Cleveland built a new dynamic trio with the hopes of returning to the NBA Finals under new Head Coach, David Blatt. With Kyrie Irving being signed to a long-term contract extension, the team had to do what it could to put pieces around him. When LeBron opted out of his contract with the Miami Heat, speculation began to grow on where he would play the upcoming season. After meeting with teams to hear their pitch, James decided it was best to go home to Cleveland.
Having Kyrie Irving and LeBron James on the same team created an extremely talented 1-2 punch. However, the Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert made another move before the start of the season that made the Cavaliers the odds on favorite to win the Eastern Conference and play for the championship. Cleveland orchestrated a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves to acquire power forward, Kevin Love. The three all-star players are now trying to imitate the success that LeBron James had in Miami with the “Big 3”.
First time NBA coach, David Blatt will have the challenge of helping build chemistry between Love, Irving, and James. All the talent in the world does not mean guaranteed titles. Love and Irving have never been to the postseason in their career. James will have to step in and be a true leader for the team given his experience in the league, in order for the Cavaliers to have success this season.
