The New York Rangers are happy that the 2014-15 season is underway. Last year the Rangers were able to reach the Stanley Cup Finals where the Los Angeles Kings defeated them. New York sports teams are unable to be satisfied with anything less than a championship. After the defeat in the Finals, the off-season was spent finding different ways to improve the roster of the Rangers.
General Manager, Glen Sather’s first move was deciding to buy out the massive contract of Brad Richards. The center signed a massive deal with New York in 2011. When the situations mattered the most, Richards was unable to be found. The cap space that was saved from the release of Richards contract was spent mainly on adding depth to the Ranger roster. The Rangers made their significant moves during the 2013-14 season before the trade deadline.
Adding Martin St. Louis was a huge move for New York. It is expected that having the all-star wing for an entire year will improve the overall play of the team. Pairing St. Louis with Rick Nash on the other side of the ice will pose nightmares for opposing teams. Hopefully, the Rangers will get everything they can out St. Louis while he is still playing for them as he will be a free agent next season. One thing that was sure to remain the same in New York would be that Henrik Lundqvist would be playing goalie this season. The reason that is a guarantee can be attributed to the seven year, $59.5 million contract the 32-year-old received last December. Even though Lundqvist may be past his prime in his career, he is still a better option than the majority of the goalies in the league. The start of the new season so far has been mediocre at best. The Rangers have posted a 7-6 record through 13 games and rank in the middle of the pack in the Metropolitan Division.
