Toronto Blue Jays rookie pitcher Jesse Litsch (7-9) threw 7 2/3 innings allowing just five hits and one run to beat the New York Yankees 4-1 on Monday.
Yankees starter Andy Pettitte (14-9) was caught early by the Blue Jays who placed three runs on the board in the second and added a fourth run in the third as the lefty lasted just six innings before being lifted for Kyle Farnsworth.
Curtis Thigpen gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead in the second with a double that scored Aaron Hill. With runners on second and third Luna grounded out, scoring Gregg Zaun and moving Thigpen to third. John McDonald then doubled to score Thigpen for the 3-0 advantage.
With one out in the third inning Alex Rios doubled to deep right. Rios advanced to third on a fly ball from Frank Thomas and then came around to score after Hill was safe at first on an error from Derek Jeter.
Casey Jannsen came on to pitch the final 1 1/3 innings to earn his 6th save of the season.
The loss pushed the Yankees to two games back of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East while they still hold a commanding 5.5 game lead in the Wild Card.
