MLB News: Final Week of Regular Season and Plenty Left Unsettled in National League

Atlanta, Ga. 9/26/2007 12:31:24 AM

After 156 games there are still no guaranteed playoff spots in the National League. While the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs look like locks for their respective division, each hold a three game lead with six games remaining, the New York Mets are two games up on the Philadelphia Phillies and apparently trying to give the East away.

As for the Wild Card the chase is wide open. At one time it looked as if the San Diego Padres would be the fourth team in but a four game losing streak has dropped them into a tie with the Phillies. With the loss of Milton Bradley the Padres find themselves in a serious battle to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Padres have two games remaining in San Francisco and then finish their regular season with a four game set in Milwaukee. San Diego will have to hope that the Atlanta Braves can beat up on the Philadelphia Phillies over the next three days but even that won’t help the Padres unless they win.

The Phillies are two games behind the Mets in the National League East but share a lead for the Wild Card at the moment. Philadelphia has a huge series with the Braves over the next  three days. After dropping their first three games of the year to Atlanta the Phillies would love to end the Braves season with at least two wins. The Phillies close out their season hosting the Washington Nationals in a three game set.

Atlanta is in an interesting spot as they have climbed to within three games of the Wild Card with the help of the sliding Padres. The Braves will need a sweep in Philadelphia if they are to have any chance. From there they’ll need to take at least two of three when they travel to Houston to close out the regular season.

While San Diego, Philadelphia and Atlanta seem to be getting most of the attention when it comes to the Wild Card the team with perhaps the most favorable schedule is the Colorado Rockies who are sitting just one game out of the Wild Card and have won eight straight. With the Padres faltering and the Phillies and Braves playing each other the Rockies could control their fate after their three game series in Los Angeles. Not only could the Rockies earn the Wild Card, they could also take the National League West as they host the Arizona Diamondbacks in their final three games.

Going back to the first statement that the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs look like locks may not be such a sure thing. The Cubs play their final six games of the year on the road, three in Florida and the final three in Cincinnati while the Diamondbacks travel to Pittsburgh before heading into Colorado. Every Cubs fan knows not to celebrate too early and with the Milwaukee Brewers sitting three games out it there are plenty in the Windy City who are holding their breath. While the Cubs close out the season on the road the Brewers have two more games at home against the St. Louis Cardinals and then host the Padres for four games. Milwaukee owns the best home record in the National League, not a good sign for the Cubs.

It is still realistic that all three division leaders heading into tonight’s games could be left out of the playoffs when the final game is played. Realistic but not likely. All three division leaders should hold on to their first place spots. Arizona has the good fortune of playing the Pirates before facing the Rockies and Colorado is not a very good road team and will have to play the Dodgers in LA. As for the Padres the way it looks now they’ll be sitting at home during the playoffs, four games in Milwaukee sounds too tough.

The Cubs should manage to win three of their next six against the Marlins and Reds which should be good enough for the National League Central and knock the Brewers out of playoff contention.

Barring a complete collapse the New York Mets should finish atop the NL East but it could be close. The Mets play their final six games of the year at home, two against the Nations, one against the Cardinals and a three game set against the Marlins.

This leaves the Wild Card question open and in all likelihood that will fall to the Phillies who should manage to win four of their final six for the playoff spot.
