Padres Score Four in Ninth to Beat Giants, Grab One Game Lead in Wild Card Race

Atlanta, Ga. 9/26/2007 1:50:08 PM

With two outs in the top of the ninth Brian Giles hit a go-ahead three-run homer that provided the San Diego Padres with a 6-4 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.

The win snapped a four game slide for the Padres who now hold a one game advantage in the Wild Card race after the Philadelphia Phillies fell to the Atlanta Braves earlier in the evening. San Diego is now one up on the Phillies and the Colorado Rockies, all three teams have five games remaining on their schedules.

It was almost a three way tie in the Wild Card race as the Padres entered the ninth inning trailing 4-2. Khalil Greene doubled to left to start the inning but two quick outs put the Padres in a desperate state but a Brady Clark single scored Greene and a walk to Oscar Robles put runners on first and second with Giles stepping into the box.

The Padres leadoff man then sent a Brian Wilson delivery over the right-field wall for the lead and possibly saved San Diego’s season. Trevor Hoffman closed the door on the Giants in the bottom half of the ninth for his 41st save of the year.
