Heisman Trophy Race: College Football Week 4

Atlanta, GA 9/26/2007 11:42:25 PM

After the fourth week of college football, the Heisman race is generally the same, except for a few names. Here is my recap thus far of the race for the illustrious Heisman trophy. The list is not in order.

Arkansas running back Darren McFadden continues to impress, regardless of suffering his second SEC loss, this time 42-29 to Kentucky. He leads the nation in rushing with 173 yards per game. Last week, he was right on average with 29 carries for 174 yards and a touchdown.

Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson is shooting up the Heisman standings and NFL draft boards with consistently impressive performances each game. Against Arkansas, he was 21-for-39 for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Woodson also set a record Saturday for consecutive passes without an interception, breaking the mark of 271 held by Fresno State's Trent Dilfer.

Louisville’s Brian Brohm has also suffered through two consecutive losses. On Saturday, his Cardinals team was upset by Syracuse, 38-35. Brohm had a phenomenal game, completed 45-for-65 for 555 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. However, being that he is the quarterback, he is going to get a lot of the blame for their recent two-game skid.

Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon is hot right now. Ever since his performance against Michigan, the nation has been watching and he has not let people down. He is fourth in the nation in pass efficiency. Last week in a 55-31 win against Stanford, Dixon completed 27-for-36 for 367 yards and four touchdowns. He remains to have no interceptions thrown all season.

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow might have had the best game of any quarterback last week. In a 30-24 win against Mississippi, Tebow completed 20-for-34 for 261 yards and two touchdowns. However, the best part of his play was his prowess on the ground. He had 27 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Tebow is third in pass efficiency and fifth in total offense.

Rutgers’ Ray Rice has been extremely efficient thus far, continuing his success from last year. He is fifth in the nation in rushing yards per game with 143.67 yards and is first in scoring, averaging three touchdowns per game. Last week was his bye week, but this week, he faces Maryland. If he matches what West Virginia did against the Terps earlier this season, he will have a great game.

West Virginia’s duo of quarterback Pat White and running back Steve Slaton helped lead the Mountaineers to a 48-7 win over East Carolina. Slaton had 18 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown. White was an astounding 18-for-20 for 181 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran nine times for 42 yards and two touchdowns. The duo is leading the WVU offense to be just three yards per game behind Navy for the nation’s best rushing offense.

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is really turning heads this year. With Colt McCoy from Texas receiving a lot of hype coming in, Bradford is taking the show in the Big 12. The redshirt freshman is second in the nation in pass efficiency and leads an offense that is first in scoring offense, third in total offense and seventh in rushing offense. In a 62-21 win against Tulsa Saturday, Bradford completed 16-for-22 for 244 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. If he isn’t in the top 3 for the Heisman this year, he will be until he leaves Norman.

Hawaii’s Colt Brennan didn’t play Saturday due to an ankle injury. He is still second in total offense and sixth in pass efficiency. He steps back on the field this week against Idaho. This was the first time in his career that he has sat out of a game.

Although Michigan had an abysmal start, one thing has been consistently great for the Wolverines: the play of running back Mike Hart. He leads the nation in carries, total rushing yards and is second in yards per game with 163.67. Last week in the 14-9 upset win against #10 Penn State, Hart had 44 carries for 175 yards and a touchdown.

USC quarterback John David Booty is the tale of two tapes. On paper, he is good, but not great. He is the last person on this list in pass efficiency (23rd nationally) and his team has the lowest pass offense of any Heisman candidate quarterback’s squad except for West Virginia. USC is 8th in the Pac-10 in passing offense and 66th in the nation. Right now, Oregon’s Dixon is the best quarterback in the conference.

However, the other tale is that Booty is the poster boy for America’s #1 team. He does what it takes to win and prove that his team is dominant. He makes great passes at great times and wills his team to win. Last week, he was 29-for-36 for 289 yards and four touchdowns. It can be said that USC doesn’t need Booty to have eye-popping statistics, so it’s unfair to judge his stats on a team with many superstars versus someone who is the king of his castle.

California wide receiver DeSean Jackson had just three catches for 39 yards in a 45-27 win against Arizona. He also had -1 yards in punt returns, which is considered his specialty. He has yet to score a receiving touchdown. For the season thus far, Jackson has just 17 catches for 151 yards, compared to 20 catches for 371 yards and six touchdowns in the first four games last year.  He might be high on everyone’s draft board, but he cannot be in the Heisman race until he produces more.
