College Football News: #5 West Virginia Looks for Revenge Friday Against #18 South Florida

Atlanta, GA 9/27/2007 4:15:09 AM

#5 West Virginia will travel to the palace of this year's Cinderella and play #18 South Florida Friday. USF, which has only been in the Football Bowl Subdivision since 2001, has stormed up the rankings and is the second best team in Florida, must to the chagrin of Florida State and Miami.

Last season, they finished 9-4 and defeated East Carolina, 24-7, in the Papajohns.com Bowl in their second season in the Big East after moving from Conference USA. One of their nine wins came in a major upset of then-No. 7 West Virginia, 24-19, snapping the Mountaineers' eight-game home winning streak and is their only loss in Morgantown in nearly two years.

In the loss, WVU's Steve Slaton, the nation's No. 2 rusher at the time, had his streak of six straight 100-yard games snapped as he ran for just 43 yards. The Mountaineers didn't score their first touchdown until midway through the third quarter and were limited to 132 yards rushing.

This year, their rushing attack is the nation's second best, averaging 357 yards per game. With the speedy addition of freshman Noel Devine, they have another option on the ground.

South Florida comes into the game with the seventh-best total defense in the nation, giving up just 237.7 yards per game. On the ground, they only give up 79 yards per game.

Defensive end George Selvie is first in the nation in sacks (8.5 this season) and tackles for loss (15). Selvie will be the focus of the West Virginia offensive line and fullback Owen Schmitt to protect quarterback Pat White.

West Virginia is no slouch on defense either, ranked 15th in total defense.

With revenge in their eyes and an additional speed back, expect West Virginia to live and die by the run.
