2007 Women’s World Cup: Marta Leads Brazil Past United States and Into Finals

Atlanta, Ga. 9/27/2007 9:39:38 PM

Brazil, in search of their first ever Women’s World Cup title, crushed the United States 4-0 on Thursday behind a pair of goals from Marta to advance to the finals where they will face Germany.

The loss ended the Americans hopes of winning their third World Cup and snapped a 51-game winning streak. For the United States the match seemed doomed before it ever started.

After going through their four previous matches undefeated the decision was made to bench goalkeeper Hope Solo for Briana Scurry. In the 21st minute the U.S. was victimized by an own goal and six minutes later Marta gave Brazil a 2-0 advantage.

The U.S. was then forced to play the second half with just ten after Shannon Boxx had picked up her second yellow card in injury time of the first half. With the man advantage Brazil was near impossible to stop as their defense was able to keep the U.S. in check.

Christiane added a goal in the 56th minute and Marta added her second goal of the match and seventh goal of the tournament in the 79th minute.

Brazil will now face Germany in the 2007 Women’s World Cup finals while the United States will face Norway in the third-place game.
