#7 Texas tries to avenge an upset from last year. After losing to then-No. 1 Ohio State, Texas suffered their second loss at the hands of Kansas State, 48-45.
This year, they look to win their ninth consecutive Big 12 opener against the Wildcats, who are 2-3 against the Longhorns since both have joined the Big 12. The last time Texas lost a conference opener was to Kansas State, 48-7, in 1998.
Coming in with a lot of hype and a spot on Heisman Trophy candidate list, Texas quarterback Colt McCoy had been disappointing thus far this season. He entered the game with four touchdown passes and five interceptions, but threw for a season-high 333 yards with three TDs and no picks against Rice last Saturday.
With wide receiver Nate Jones as his favorite target this season, wide receiver Limas Sweed has been out of the limelight. Jones is the possession receiver for the Longhorns, while Sweed is the deep threat, averaging 17.8 yards per catch.
Running back Jamaal Charles will be the key for the Longhorns in not just this game, but throughout the remainder of the season. The Big 12's leading rusher had just 14 carries for 74 yards, but he scored three touchdowns in the 58-14 rout against Rice.
Kansas State's defense will be prepared. They rank ninth in the FBS in rushing yards allowed (68.0 per game) and 16th in scoring defense (15.7 points per game).
The Wildcats didn't play last weekend, but beat Missouri State 61-10 on Sept. 15. Wide receiver Jordy Nelson set single-game school records with 15 receptions and 209 yards. He caught a touchdown pass and threw for another as Kansas State recorded its highest point total since shutting out Kansas 64-0 on Nov. 2, 2002.
James Johnson ran for 114 yards and three touchdowns as the Wildcats compiled 546 yards of total offense, but the Kansas State defense was just as impressive, holding Missouri State to 191 total yards, more than 260 yards below its season average.
